Screen Rant has the exclusive trailer and poster reveal for the upcoming film, The Time Capsule. The FilmRise release, which will come to select theaters and on demand June 3, is a sci-fi romance that follows a down-and-out politician named Jack (played by One Day at a Time's Todd Grinnell) who accidentally reunites with his first love, Elise (Brianna Hildebrand, who first broke out in the Deadpool film franchise). She has just returned from a 20-year space voyage, and yet somehow has not aged a day.

Nursing a wounded ego from his recent failed political campaign and tired from trying to save his marriage to controlling wife, Maggie (portrayed by Private Practice's KaDee Strickland), Jack takes refuge in his family’s summer lake house. The place where he spent much of his teenage years suddenly becomes an even stronger reminder of the past when his ex-girlfriend arrives looking exactly the same as the day she left on a mission to outer space. The question then becomes: will Jack get a second chance with his first love, or will he use those lessons to work on his present marriage?

Grinnell has been involved in more family comedies recently. Not only was he an integral part of the beloved Netflix (and later Pop TV) reboot of One Day At  A Time, but he also recently starred in the Amazon Prime dramady series With Love. For that reason, The Time Capsule may seem to be something of a departure. But based on the trailer, which you can view alone, the sci-fi element provides a jumping off point for what is sure to be an exploration of love and family - much like the work for which he is already known.

The Time Capsule takes place in the future, but it's a future near enough to be recognizable. While the space travel in the story is clearly more advanced than ours, it really merely serves as the premise for Jack to face some probing questions about his life. Is he still the person Elise once fell in love with, or has he changed into the one that his wife Maggie needs? Is returning to love he had in the past running away, or is staying in an unhappy marriage in the present hiding?

The trailer does not make the answers evident, but instead emphasizes the melancholy and contemplative nature of the narrative. Check out the poster below, which adds to the ethereal atmosphere created in the trailer:

The Landier Entertainment film was written by Chad Fifer, who previously wrote the animated superhero adventure The Chosen One, and Erwann Marshall, who is celebrating his feature-length directorial debut with The Capsule. Rounding out the cast of this multi-genre movie are Baron Vaughn (Grace And Frankie) and Ravi Patel (Wonder Woman 1984).

The Time Capsule will be released in select theaters as well as On Demand June 3.
