Season 3 of the Netflix supernatural series Locke & Key will be the show's last. Based on the IDW comic series of the same name from Joe Hill and Gabriel Rodríguez, the fantasy-horror thriller first premiered on the streaming service in 2020 to generally positive reviews. Season 2 of Locke & Key was released in December 2021 and was filmed back-to-back with season 3.
Locke & Key centers on the Locke family following patriarch Rendell Locke's murder. His wife Nina Locke (Darby Stanchfield) whisks her three children, Tyler (Connor Jessup), Kinsey (Emilia Jones), and Bode (Jackson Robert Scott), to Matheson, Massachusetts to live in the Rendell family home called the Keyhouse. There, the children discover mysterious keys that can be used to unlock certain doors throughout the house in magical ways. However, they soon realize that an evil Demonic entity called Dodge has awakened and is also searching for the keys.
According to a recent Deadline report, the show will officially come to an end following season 3. Ahead of its season 2 premiere last December, a third season was announced, but the new report confirms that it will be the show's last. According to showrunners Carlton Cuse and Meredith Averill, ending on the third season was the plan all along. Cuse and Averill were initially approached by Netflix with a three-season deal, allowing for a ten-episode season 1 and season 2 and an eight-episode season 3, meaning the show was structured accordingly from the start. Read what they had to say below.
"Once we began working on the series, we felt three seasons was the ideal length to bring the story of the Locke family and their Keyhouse adventures to a satisfying conclusion. As storytellers, we are grateful that we had the opportunity to tell our version of Joe Hill and Gabriel Rodriguez’s incredible story exactly the way we wanted. We’re keeping the magical keys, though, for our own personal use."
Season 2 wrapped up many of its storylines but also established even more plot points that will need to be concluded in season 3. First introduced in flashbacks, the British Revolutionary War Captain Gideon was revealed to have been the first person to discover the portal behind the Black Door, also becoming the first person possessed by a demon. The ancestor of Josh Bennett was shown to have been summoned back to Earth by an echo of Eden, setting up a stand-off with the Locke family.
Although the show is coming to an end, there was talk of a crossover with Neil Gaiman's upcoming Netflix comic adaptation Sandman, a crossover that has already occurred in comics. Although nothing has been confirmed, it would give the creatives behind Locke & Key a chance to revisit their characters and the world they created. The third and final season of Locke & Key is currently finishing up production and is expected to land on Netflix later this year.
