Warning: This article contains spoilers for The Bubble.
Karen Gillan has given a glimpse at some of The Bubble's cast together in a new behind-the-scenes photo. The new comedy film premiered on Netflix on April 1, and was directed and co-written by Judd Apatow, famous for projects like The 40-Year-Old Virgin, Knocked Up, and The King of Staten Island. The movie follows the cast and crew of a blockbuster action franchise, Cliff Beasts, as they navigate shooting a sequel while in quarantine during a pandemic. Apatow has talked about tackling the COVID-19 pandemic through the comedy film by making something audiences would enjoy, rather than be scared by, and brought together a cast of comedic talents for the task. In addition to Gillan, The Bubble stars Leslie Mann, Iris Apatow, Fred Armisen, Keegan-Michael Key, David Duchovny, Maria Bakalova, Pedro Pascal, and Kate McKinnon.
So far, The Bubble has received mostly negative reviews from critics, but given its star-studded cast and the heavy promotion involved, it has the potential to perform well on Netflix. The project pokes fun at the concept of filming a big budget feature with actors living together in a hotel during production, as was the case with many recent and upcoming blockbusters. Prior to The Bubble's release, Netflix teased the fictional Cliff Beasts 6 through marketing, which caused some confusion among many potential viewers, but also resulted in interest in Apatow's latest project. Leading up to The Bubble release date, however, it was finally confirmed that Cliff Beasts 6 was not a real movie, and that the buildup was, in fact, centered around The Bubble.
Now, Gillan has shared a behind-the-scenes photo of her and some of The Bubble's cast on Instagram. The image features the actor, along with Iris Apatow, Key, Duchovny, Bakalova, and Pascal. In her caption, the actor teases that these stars are only part of The Bubble cast and promotes that the film is out now. Check out the photo below:
Viewers who already saw The Bubble will have noticed that a handful of other additional stars appeared in the COVID comedy, as well. John Cena is featured as Cliff Beasts 6's stunt coordinator, as he explains the fight choreography to the cast over a monitor. What's more, Daisy Ridley plays a fitness trainer who appears over video, as well as in person towards the end of the film, while John Lithgow plays a studio executive. Other surprising cameos in The Bubble include James McAvoy and musician Beck, who appear as themselves.
It will be interesting to see if the mixed reviews for Apatow's latest film have any effect on its ratings performance. Given the COVID-19 pandemic is now in its third year, it's possible that viewers will be looking for a different spin on the pandemic concept, and will be happy to enjoy a few laughs. Looking at Gillan's behind-the-scenes photo, it certainly seems that she and the rest of The Bubble cast had fun making the film, which is evident in its fun, lighthearted take on a serious and universal experience.
