Bob Odenkirk’s next television show after Better Caul Saul, Straight Man, is already in development. The 59-year-old actor is best known for his role as Saul Goodman in AMC’s Breaking Bad and its subsequent spinoff series Better Call Saul. The latter show began filming its sixth and final season (currently airing on AMC) back in March 2021 but was hindered by delays caused by the COVID-19 pandemic. Another major setback disrupted the production in July after Odenkirk unexpectedly collapsed on set after suffering a heart attack.

Now, Variety reports that development on Odenkirk’s next project, Straight Man, is already well underway. The new AMC series will be produced in conjunction with Sony’s TriStar TV and Gran Via, with Aaron Zelman (Silicon Valley) and Paul Lieberstein (The Office) serving as co-showrunners and executive producers. As well as starring, Odenkirk is also attached to executive produce with his wife, Naomi Odenkirk, as well as Richard Russo and Marc Provissiero. Eyeing a 2023 release date, AMC reportedly hopes to expedite the development process.

Based on Russo’s 1997 novel of the same name, Straight Man follows William Henry Devereaux Jr. (Odenkirk), the chairman of the English department in the terribly underfunded Railton College, set in the Pennsylvanian rust belt. The show marks Odenkrik’s third series with AMC after Breaking Bad and Better Call Saul, with the network no doubt hoping for another acclaimed hit from the Emmy-nominated actor. In addition to Straight Man, it was also recently reported that Odenkirk was working on a new documentary-style comedy for Paramount+ alongside Arrested Development star David Cross that will reunite the Mr. Show with Bob and David stars.
